Strategic European market expansion

Stage:Mature scale-up (global growth)
Industry:FinTech / SaaS / Payments

ReCharge, a major player in subscription billing for e-commerce, approached Sandorian as part of their strategic exploration into the European market. As a North American fintech company, they recognized the opportunity, and the complexity, of serving European merchants and consumers.

The Challenge

A key consideration was whether to integrate Mollie as a payment service provider (PSP), and what this would mean across both business strategy and technical infrastructure. ReCharge needed to understand not just the technical feasibility, but the strategic implications of such an integration.

Our Approach

Sandorian led a two-track engagement designed to answer two pivotal questions: Should we integrate Mollie? And what would it take if we did?

Strategic Feasibility Study

We assessed not only the technical feasibility, but more importantly the strategic merit of integrating Mollie. This meant helping a North American fintech company deeply understand how the European payment landscape is fundamentally different. It's fragmented, bank-driven, and powered by local preferences over global standards.

We mapped out how this divergence creates both complexity and opportunity: local payment methods like iDEAL, Bancontact, and SEPA direct debit aren't just "nice to have". They're essential for market entry and conversion. Our analysis contextualized these shifts within ReCharge's product model, business goals, and long-term global ambitions.

API Impact Assessment

Once the strategic case was clear, we performed a deep technical dive into how a Mollie integration would affect ReCharge's API. We mapped the full scope of changes needed, from new payment method flows and mandate handling to webhooks, error states, and refund behavior.

Our work detailed exactly how the API surface would evolve, how to preserve backward compatibility, and what changes would be visible to developers and merchants. We specified not just the "what," but the "how" and "why," allowing ReCharge to plan implementation with confidence.

Key Deliverables

  • Comprehensive European payments landscape analysis
  • Market-specific conversion optimization recommendations
  • Technical integration specification and roadmap
  • API evolution strategy and backward compatibility plan
  • Implementation risk assessment and mitigation strategies

The Outcome

Our work paved the way for ReCharge to confidently navigate the European payments landscape, equipped with both strategic clarity and technical readiness. The insights and specifications we delivered enabled their teams to move forward with a solid foundation for future European expansion.

The detailed technical specifications and strategic recommendations provided ReCharge with a clear roadmap for implementing European payment methods while maintaining their high standards for merchant and developer experience.
